I’ve always been terrible with money. Not drowning in debt, but I’d check my bank account around the 15th wondering where $340 disappeared to. Subscriptions made sense. Coffee too. But there was this weird gap I couldn’t explain until I tracked everything for 30 days straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turns out I was dropping about $180 monthly on entertainment without realizing it. Some went to streaming services I barely touched. Some vanished into mobile games. And a decent chunk went to online gaming platforms where I’d mess around with the jetx game<\/a> and similar stuff during lunch breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why I Built a Salary-to-Entertainment Ratio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gaming isn’t bad. Unwinding with games is totally normal. But I wasn’t treating it like a real budget item. I was just… doing it, like grabbing gas station snacks that add up to $47.50 by month’s end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I got curious about what percentage of my income should go toward fun stuff. Most financial experts suggest between 5% and 10% for entertainment. I make $4,200 monthly after taxes, so theoretically I should cap entertainment at $420.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here’s where things got interesting. I wasn’t just over budget. I was treating all entertainment like it was the same thing. Spending $15 on a movie ticket felt identical to $15 on a gaming session, but the experiences were completely different. One lasted 2 hours. The other sometimes just 20 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started splitting my entertainment spending into three buckets: social stuff like bars and events with friends, passive entertainment like streaming subscriptions, and active gaming which included online platforms and console games. Once I saw the breakdown, I realized I was spending 60% of my entertainment budget on things that gave me maybe 20% of my actual enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spreadsheet That Changed Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’m not a spreadsheet person. I’ve tried budgeting apps and they never stuck. But I created this dead-simple Google Sheet with just four columns: Date, Category, Amount, and Notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Friday at 3:00pm I’d spend 10 minutes updating it. And I’d write little notes like “played during conference call” or “actually had fun” or “shouldn’t have chased losses.” Those notes ended up being gold because they showed me patterns I’d never noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, I spent way more on Tuesdays, my most stressful work day. And I’d spend more after 9:00pm when I was tired and not thinking clearly. Just seeing those patterns written out helped me make better choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After tracking for 8 weeks I cut my entertainment spending by 31% without feeling deprived. I just stopped the mindless stuff that wasn’t bringing me joy. The gaming sessions that were genuinely fun? I kept those. I just became more intentional about when and why I was playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
